چکیده
The Atlantic humpback dolphin is a small delphinid regionally endemic to the tropical and subtropical eastern Atlantic nearshore waters of West Africa (Culik, 2002; Jefferson et al.). Its status was recently and comprehensively reviewed as part of the CMS/UNEP Wafcet-2 project (Van Waerebeek et al., 2003, 2004). S. teuszii was described in 1892 from a carcass found in Cameroon. Second and third specimens were collected respectively in 1925 and 1943 in Senegal. Next it was sighted south of Conakry, Guinea, in 1953. Over the next half-century it was encountered in Dakhla Bay (Rio de Oro/Western Sahara), Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania), SinéSaloum delta (Senegal), Niumi National Park (The Gambia), Canal do Gêba-Bijagos (GuineaBissau), southern Guinea, Gabon Estuary and finally in southern Angola, but it has never been considered a common species (Beaubrun, 1990; Robineau and Vely, 1998; Van Waerebeek et al., 2003; Collins et al., 2004).

Conspicuous vertebral column abnormalities in humpback dolphins (genus Sousa) were documented for the first time during 3 photo-identification field studies of small populations in Taiwan, Senegal and Angola. Seven Taiwanese humpback dolphins S. chinensis taiwanensis with vertebral column anomalies (lordosis, kyphosis or scoliosis) were identified, along with 2 possible cases of vertebral osteo...

2.2 Population There are no credible published population estimates (Powell, 1996). The species is reported to be reduced, and it is believed that several local populations have been extirpated. (However, anecdotal records continue to be reported from throughout what is believed to be the original range). The species is thought to satisfy an IUCN criterion for vulnerable status (at least a 20% ...

The most usual present treatment, however, recognises the western and eastern populations as separate full species, Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei respectively. The eastern and western populations are separated by approximately 1,000 km (Garner and Ryder, 1996). Western and eastern populations can be distinguished based on external features (Groves, 2002) and clear geographic and morpholo...
